From the workshop · Before & after

Same watch. A whole new character.

An existing watch became the starting point for a completely different look: a custom engraved dial with a half-human, half-machine portrait, raised metallic details and a red eye. A black strap completes the transformation. Have a watch you would like to reimagine? Send us a photo and your idea so we can check what is possible.

Before Cream dial, Hebrew numerals and brown leather.
After A new engraved dial, a red eye and a darker strap.
Inside the makeover: what changed and where to begin

The starting point The original watch had a cream dial, Hebrew numerals and a brown leather strap. Its case gave the project a starting shape; the new dial changed the visual direction.

The transformation A dark engraved portrait brings together human and machine details. Raised metallic features and a red eye give the dial its focus, while the black strap carries the darker palette beyond the face. The before-and-after photographs show how much character a dial can change.

Your version Send clear front and back photos of your watch, its model or movement if known, and what you want to keep or change. We review the dial fit, hands and condition before agreeing the work, price and timing. Some watches suit a dial replacement; others need a different build approach.

Openwork · NH72

A custom open-centre dial frames the exposed NH72 movement. A blue seconds hand and black strap complete the watch; an engraved crown and exhibition back add details beyond the dial.

Inside the build: designing around an open centre

A dial that frames the movement Here, the open centre is part of the design. The black custom dial frames the visible NH72 movement, with the remaining dial surface carrying the hour markers. The loose-dial photograph shows that frame before assembly.

Details across the whole watch The blue seconds hand adds a colour accent above the movement. A black strap, engraved crown and exhibition back continue the design beyond the front view. Choosing these details together gives the complete watch its character.

Start with the look you want Bring a sketch or reference and tell us how much of the movement you want to see. We work through the movement, dial opening, hands and case together before confirming feasibility and a quote. You can also ask for a dial on its own; its dimensions and mounting need to match your build.

Dial studies

The face can be the whole idea.

Some projects begin as a custom dial. Engraving depth, exposed brass, colour, typography and negative space can be explored before a complete watch is chosen.

Custom dial

One Design, Two Finishes

Roman numerals, an inner 24-hour track and a guilloché-style centre, made as two separate dials: one in a silver tone and one in a warm rose-gold tone. Each dial keeps its raised details in the same metal colour.

MADE IN THE REXX WORKSHOP

Raised metal. Colour. A dial of your own.

Our custom metal dials begin with reverse etching: a fiber laser removes the background and leaves the design raised in the original metal.

01 / Shape the metal

Indices, numerals, minute markers, lettering and artwork remain raised while the laser engraves the surrounding surface. Patterns and guilloché-style textures can become part of the design.

02 / Add the colour

The dial is painted by hand with an airbrush, usually in one colour. Some designs can combine colours; we assess the artwork before confirming what can be painted cleanly.

03 / Reveal the details

Careful sanding and polishing expose the raised metal again. The exposed indices, logo, text and minute markers normally share the same silver, gold or rose-gold tone.

What to know before designing your dial

Bring an idea, sketch, logo or reference image. We will help adapt it for production. Different printed or painted colours are not the same as different exposed-metal finishes.

We currently do not offer sunburst finishing, luminous paint or Super-LumiNova application, stone or diamond setting, or soldered dial feet. Adhesive dial dots are provided instead. For an existing watch, send the model and any known dial or movement dimensions so we can assess fit.

THREE WAYS AN IDEA TAKES SHAPE

From a visual idea to a finished design.

These workshop projects show different starting points: a pattern, a texture and a symbol. Use them to explain what you like, then tell us what you would make your own.

Gold-tone Honeycomb watch with black and brass dial and burgundy strap

Honeycomb

A small bee and repeating geometry become the centre of a complete watch.

Explore the design: Honeycomb

Starting point

Made for Rosh Hashanah, this project brings honeycomb geometry and a small bee into a black-and-brass dial.

Design choices

Exposed brass outlines define the dark cells; one solid cell interrupts the pattern. A gold-tone fluted case and burgundy leather strap carry the warm palette into the finished watch.

For your own project

Bring a motif or occasion, your preferred colours and a case direction. We can discuss a custom dial alone or a complete build, with the details adapted to the chosen components.

Iron Cockpit dial with concentric texture and raised Arabic numerals

Iron Cockpit

Concentric texture and raised numerals give the dial its industrial character.

Explore the design: Iron Cockpit

Starting point

This dial explores an industrial visual direction through a restrained dark surface and exposed metal details.

Design choices

Concentric engraving provides texture while the raised Arabic numerals remain the main reading points. Compact Rexx lettering leaves space for the pattern.

For your own project

Tell us the texture, numeral style and painted background you have in mind. Raised markings normally share one exposed-metal tone; we will assess spacing and legibility with your artwork.

Deep green dial with a brass tree and Roman numerals

Tree of Life

A single symbol gives a green-and-brass dial its visual identity.

Explore the design: Tree of Life

Starting point

The tree is the main graphic element, framed by Roman numerals on a deep green surface.

Design choices

The exposed brass tree and numerals share a warm tone. The painted background creates contrast, keeping the central symbol distinct from the surrounding hour markers.

For your own project

Send a meaningful symbol, sketch or logo. We can discuss its scale, the surrounding markers and the background colour, then adapt the artwork to the dial size.

How a Rexx Custom Build Starts

1. Start with the idea

Send the watch you like, the dial direction, a sketch, a reference, a logo, or even a rough mood. You do not need a technical spec sheet to begin.

Message Rexx

2. Agree on the design

We work through the case, movement, dial, hands and finish with you, then confirm what is feasible, the price and the timing. For a bespoke commission, you receive a custom purchase link once the specification is agreed.

Open dial & watch designer

3. Make your watch or dial

Your project moves to the workshop after the order is confirmed. Complete watches are assembled and checked; standalone custom dials are made to the agreed specification. We confirm compatibility before promising a fit.

What Can Be Customized

Common custom choices include dial design, dial color, hand set, strap or bracelet, case style, bezel direction, date or no-date layout, engraved details, logo work, and special finishing. Some builds stay close to an existing Rexx model. Others become one-off watches built around a story, symbol, project, or personal style.

Every custom project is still grounded in real watchmaking limits. Rexx will tell you clearly what can be done, what should be avoided, and which choices will make the finished watch stronger.
